The Royal G. Jackson Papers consist ofmaterials created or assembled by Jackson in the course of his research.The bulk of the materials pertain to the history of the Oregon StateUniversity College of Forestry, McDonald Forest, the Civilian ConservationCorps (CCC) Camp Arborteum, and nature-based tourism in central Oregon andCosta Rica. The papers include extensive oral history sound recordings andphotographs. Jackson was a faculty member in the Oregon State UniversityCollege of Forestry from 1970 until 2004.

Basque sheepherders immigrated from northern Spain and southwestern France to southeastern Oregon, Idaho, and Nevada from the 1890s until the early 1920s. They worked as itinerant herders on the mountain ranges of Harney County until the 1930s and often spent the winters in Basque boarding houses or hotels, such as the Star Hotel in Burns. The first forestry class was taught at OSU in 1896 and ten years later the first four-year degree program was established. Forestry was elevated to school status in 1913, with George Peavy as its first dean, and became a college in 1984. Graduate work was authorized in 1921; the Ph. D. program began in 1959. George Wilcox Peavy was born 12 November 1869 in Howell, Michigan. He received his Bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts at the University of Michigan. He obtained his Master of Science degree in Forestry at his alma mater. After receiving his M.S. degree in Forestry in 1905, he entered the United States Forest Service, during which time he traveled throughout the United States and Europe, observing and writing about forestry use and practices.
